How Many Shares Can a Retail Investor Apply For?

Retail individual investors can bid up to ₹2 lakh in an IPO. At the upper band of ₹1,119, one lot of 12 shares costs ₹13,428, so the maximum is 14 lots (168 shares), costing ₹1,87,992. A 15th lot would take the bid to ₹2,01,420, above the retail limit. These are GoPocket calculations based on the price band and lot size.

ApplicationLotsSharesAmount at ₹1,119
Retail (minimum)112₹13,428
Retail (maximum)14168₹1,87,992

In heavily subscribed IPOs, retail allotment is usually decided by lottery, and successful applicants typically get one lot. Applying for many lots doesn't usually raise your chances of getting one.

What Are the Employee and Reliance Shareholder Quotas?

Up to ₹500 crore is reserved for eligible employees, who receive a discount of ₹54 per share, The Week reported. At the upper band, that means employees pay ₹1,065 a share.

A separate tranche of ₹2,500 crore is reserved for shareholders of Reliance Industries, Tech Times reported. Business Today reported that eligibility is expected to depend on holding at least one Reliance share as of the RHP filing date, October 14, 2026. Investors who think they qualify should confirm the exact eligibility rules in the RHP before bidding. Eligible shareholders can generally bid in both the shareholder category and the retail category.

What Will Jio Do With the Money?

Up to ₹27,500 crore will be used to repay or prepay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, whose total borrowings were about ₹71,529 crore as of March 2026, Tech Times reported. The rest will go to general corporate purposes. Because it is a fresh issue, all the money goes to the company, not to selling shareholders. Reliance Industries held 66.43% before the IPO and remains the majority owner.

GoPocket Analysis: What Does the Price Band Imply for Valuation?

The RHP-based figures allow a simple valuation check:

  • Total shares after IPO: 27 crore new shares are about 2.9% of post-issue equity, implying roughly 931 crore shares in total.
  • Market value at ₹1,119: 931 crore × ₹1,119 ≈ ₹10.4 lakh crore, in line with the roughly ₹10.3–10.4 lakh crore reported by the media.
  • Price-to-earnings on FY26 profit: FY26 profit after tax was ₹30,064 crore, so ₹10.4 lakh crore ÷ ₹30,064 crore ≈ 34.5x.
  • Market value to EBITDA: FY26 EBITDA was ₹76,255 crore, giving about 13.7x (before adjusting for debt).

Some brokerage notes have quoted a lower multiple of about 31.7–33.3 times FY26 earnings per share, Business Today reported. The difference comes from the earnings base and share count used. Either way, the market is being asked to pay a growth multiple for India's largest telecom operator.

What Are the Key Risks?

  • Tariff dependence: Earnings growth relies on average revenue per user rising through tariff increases.
  • Capital intensity: Telecom needs heavy ongoing spending on spectrum and networks.
  • Group concentration: Reliance controls the company, so minority shareholders have limited influence.
  • Size and allotment: A very large issue can see uneven demand across categories, and retail allotment odds depend on subscription.
  • Crowded calendar: Paras Healthcare's IPO opens on the same dates.

How to Prepare to Apply

  1. Check that your demat account is active and linked to your PAN.
  2. Keep funds ready in your UPI-linked bank account; the amount is blocked, not debited, until allotment.
  3. Read the RHP sections on risk factors, financials and the shareholder quota.
  4. Bid between October 21 and 23; retail investors can choose the cut-off price.
