HDFC Bank Share Price After Q2 FY27 Results: Profit Rises 4.7%, Margins and Other Income Hold Back Growth
HDFC Bank reported a standalone net profit of ₹19,509.96 crore for the July–September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY27), up 4.7% from ₹18,641.28 crore a year earlier. Net interest income rose 9.7% to about ₹34,620 crore and gross NPAs improved to 1.11%. The share price fell 2.3% on October 19, the first trading session after the results.
The numbers weren't bad, but they weren't what the market wanted either. Loans and deposits grew in the mid-to-high teens, yet profit grew at less than a third of that pace. Here's why, and what HDFC Bank shareholders should watch from here. You can track the live HDFC Bank share price on GoPocket.

The board approved the results on Saturday, October 17, 2026. One outlet reported the standalone profit as ₹19,610 crore; the filing figure is ₹19,509.96 crore, which matches multiple other reports, so that's the number we've used.
Why Did HDFC Bank's Profit Grow Only 4.7%?
HDFC Bank's profit lagged because other income fell and expenses grew faster than total income, even though core lending income rose close to 10%. Three factors explain most of the gap.
- Lower other income: Other income, which includes fees and treasury gains, fell by about ₹519 crore year-on-year. That alone wiped out a chunk of the NII gain.
- Thin margins: The net interest margin (NIM) was 3.16% on total assets and 3.32% on interest-earning assets. NIM is the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits, as a share of assets. HDFC Bank's NIM has stayed below its pre-merger levels since it absorbed the higher-cost borrowings of the former HDFC Ltd.
- Costs: Operating expenses grew about 5.5%, keeping the cost-to-income ratio at 39.1%.
Provisions, on the other hand, weren't the problem. They rose just 2.1%, and the credit cost ratio was a modest 0.44%.
GoPocket Analysis: Pre-Provision Profit Tells a Clearer Story
A simple way to see the bank's underlying earning power is pre-provision operating profit: NII plus other income, minus operating expenses. Using the rounded figures above:
- Q2 FY27: ₹34,620 + ₹13,831 − ₹18,970 = about ₹29,481 crore
- Q2 FY26: ₹31,550 + ₹14,350 − ₹17,980 = about ₹27,920 crore
That's growth of roughly 5.6%, by our calculation. So the slow profit growth isn't a bad-loan story. It's an earnings-engine story: loans are growing at 16%, but income per rupee lent hasn't kept pace. Until margins or fee income pick up, profit growth may continue to trail balance sheet growth. That's an observation from the data, not a forecast.
How Strong Were Loan and Deposit Growth?
Balance sheet growth was healthy. Gross advances reached about ₹32.20 lakh crore, up 16.3% year-on-year. Period-end deposits were about ₹33.27 lakh crore, up 18.8%, while average deposits rose 16.8%.
| Segment | YoY growth |
|---|---|
| Retail loans | +11.7% |
| SME and mid-market loans | +23.5% |
| Corporate loans | +16.4% |
| Average CASA deposits | +10.7% |
Deposits growing faster than loans is a positive for HDFC Bank. After the 2023 merger, its loan-to-deposit ratio was unusually high, and the bank has been working to bring it down. The catch is cost: CASA (current and savings account) deposits were 31.6% of total deposits, and they grew slower than total deposits. CASA money is the cheapest funding a bank has, so a falling CASA share tends to pressure margins.
Is HDFC Bank's Asset Quality Improving?
Yes. Gross NPAs fell to 1.11% of gross advances from 1.24% a year earlier and 1.17% in the June quarter. Excluding agricultural loans, gross NPAs were just 0.87%. Net NPAs fell to 0.37% from 0.42%. Capital adequacy stood at 18.9%, well above the 11.9% regulatory requirement, with CET1 at 17.1%.
Asset quality is one of the few areas where HDFC Bank continues to compare well with peers. Strong capital also gives the bank room to keep growing loans without raising equity.

The stock is now about 31% below its 52-week high of ₹1,020.50 (October 23, 2025) and about 4% above its 52-week low of ₹681.90 (September 11, 2026). Over the same period, the Nifty 50 has also fallen, so part of the decline reflects the broader market. But HDFC Bank has underperformed private-sector rivals such as ICICI Bank, which reported 20% profit growth for the same quarter. Read our ICICI Bank Q2 FY27 results analysis for the comparison.
What Are the Risks for HDFC Bank Shareholders?
- Margin pressure: If deposit costs stay high while lending rates are competitive, NIM may stay near current levels.
- Fee and treasury income: Other income fell this quarter. It can be volatile and is hard to predict.
- Funding mix: A falling CASA share raises the average cost of funds.
- Market sentiment: As one of the heaviest stocks in the Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty, HDFC Bank is sensitive to foreign investor flows.
What Should Investors Watch Next?
- Trend in NIM over the next two quarters.
- Whether other income stabilises.
- CASA ratio and deposit costs.
- Loan-to-deposit ratio as deposits keep outgrowing loans.
